ICAO to study if cap on height of buildings in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Wadala can be relaxed

Mumbai: The International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations special agency into aviation sector, will soon conduct a study to check whether the height restrictions on buildings in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Wadala can be relaxed.

The height restrictions on buildings depend on their proximity to the airport—both BKC and Wadala fall within the 4km radius of the airport. While the maximum height permitted for buildings located farthest from the airport in BKC is about 80m, in Wadala it is 100-102m. The International Civil Aviation Organization has set standards and recommended practices for obstacle limitation surface for aircraft to approach and depart safely from the airport to prevent accidents.

MMRDA commissioner U P S Madan, who met civil aviation authorities last week, confirmed , "A study will be carried out by ICAO."

In June, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had requested the aviation ministry to grant permission for taller buildings in these two locations as the state government had announced a floor space index (FSI) of 4 and also decided to develop an international financial centre in BKC.
