Madurai: Customs officials seized 247 live star tortoises from a man at the Madurai Airport on Sunday evening. He was identified as Abdul Haleem, 60, from Ilayankudi in Ramanathapuram district. He was transporting the tortoises to Kuala Lumpur and has allegedly been acting as transporter (kuruvi) for someone in Chennai.
The tortoises were packed in a hand luggage and all of them were alive. Customs officials handed the tortoises and the smuggler to the forest department for further investigation.
