More fuel to fill Europe air void

Calcutta: Calcutta airport is working with the state government to come out with a range of incentives for airlines to shake off their dread of losing money on flights between the city and Europe.

The Airports Authority of India is persuading Jet Airways to start direct flights to Brussels, its hub in Europe, after receiving no response to a similar proposal from five out of six European airlines that had been approached.

One of the ideas being bounced around is to offer a sales tax waiver on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to Jet Airways for its domestic operations as an incentive to start a Europe flight. "We will propose to the government that Jet Airways be given a tax waiver on ATF on domestic routes for the amount of fuel it will load on its aircraft for a Europe flight," airport director Anil Kumar Sharma told Metro on Friday.

Sources said the Mamata Banerjee government, which has already offered a tax waiver on ATF to international airlines willing to start direct flights to Europe, would hire a private consultant to recommend what else could be done to woo them.

A senior official of the state government said airport director Sharma had been asked to formally submit a proposal on getting Jet Airways to operate a flight to Brussels by offering a conditional tax waiver on ATF for domestic flights. "We have to seek the finance department's opinion on this since the tax waiver will be for domestic flights," the official added.
