Odisha airport leans on Forest Dept to fight bird menace

Bhubaneswar: With rising incidents of bird hit at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here, airport authorities have now written to the Odisha Forest Department to catch the birds and leave them elsewhere.
As per a recent study, there are about 49 species of birds living inside the airport compound and more than 100 species of bird living around the airport premises.

“We have given the Forest Department a proposal asking them to take the birds away from here and leave them elsewhere. If they approve the proposal, we are willing to take necessary steps to remove them from this place,” said Senior Manager of Airport Air Traffic Control Sharat Kumar Sahu.
Notably, there have been 57 incidents of bird hit in the past four years. While there were 10 such incidents last year, the number has already reached 11 this year with over three months still left in the year.
