Pitrapaksha, annual festival of souls begins, Air India to resume daily service on Gaya-Delhi route

Gaya:  Pitrapaksha, the annual festival of souls began on Sunday. Magadh division commissioner Bandana Kinni inaugurated the most important event of Gaya Calender at a function held in the Vishnupad area. Kinni promised good service delivery to the pilgrims coming to the place for Pindadan rituals. More than a quarter pilgrims from the country and abroad are expected to perform the three format rituals for the final salvation of ancestral soul.

Format one, according to Panda leader Mahesh Guput entails a comprehensive fortnight long protocol to deliver final salvation to the wandering soul of ancestors. Format two, envisages three day long prayers and ritual performance.

The third format is the quick version in which all the rituals are performed on the same day between sun rise and sun set. Most of the pilgrims, for reasons of time and economy prefer the one day format. All the three formats end in Suphal in which the acceptance decree is awarded by the family Panda, the superior priest, who, in most cases outsources ritual performance to the local Brahmins while retaining the Suphal Monopoly with himself. Besides Pindadan rituals, Gaya is also known for Pitra Dosh Nivaran, a ritual performed to ward of evil spirits tormenting families and causing unnatural deaths.
