New Delhi: Passengers of an Air India flight had a harrowing time on Monday after the aircraft suffered a tyre burst and had to make an emergency landing at the Delhi airport. As a result, the airport's main runway remained shut for a brief period.
The Air India Delhi - Bagdogra flight (AI 879), with 143 passengers on board, took off from the runway 29 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11.32 am on Monday. At around 11.50 am, a tyre burst was detected in the aircraft and subsequently it landed back at Delhi airport.
All emergency procedures at the airport were immediately initiated. "If an aircraft suffers a tyre burst, there are chances of an uneven landing. That is why many safety precautions are required to be taken," said a source at the airport. Fire tenders were positioned near the runway and medical aid facilities were also kept on stand by.
"The flight had a safe landing at 12.20 pm at the airport," an Air India spokesperson said.
