3.5kg gold seized at Chennai airport

Chennai:  Customs authorities at Chennai international airport on Tuesday seized 3.5 kg of gold worth about Rs 87.5 lakh from two passengers in two separate incidents. The two passengers have been detained for questioning.

In the first incident, the authorities stopped a 40-year-old man who arrived on a Malaysian Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur at 2.30am after they found his suitcase was of an unusual size and stopped him. A thorough check revealed the suitcase had hidden compartments containing four gold biscuits, each weighing 500 grams, worth around Rs 50 lakh in the international market.

In the other incident, a 35-year-old man who arrived from Dubai on an Indigo Airlines flight was found carrying 15 gold biscuits, each weighing 100 grams, worth Rs 37.50 lakh.

The authorities have not disclosed the names of the arrested men and are questioning them to find out for whom the gold was intended.
