Customs men pose as flyers to nab smugglers

Mumbai: Customs officers posing as passengers have started travelling on certain flights from Mumbai as part of a widening crackdown on gold smuggling.

Their target: passengers hired by smugglers to retrieve the gold hidden on international flights that ferry domestic fliers in the second leg of their journey.

"There are flights which arrive from international destinations and proceed on domestic legs. For instance, Jet Airways flight 9W-539 from Muscat to Mumbai later travels to Kolkata. On such flights, smuggling attempts are made," a senior Customs official said.

"In the past three months, we have also identified some Air India flights to Goa, a Jet Airways flight to Chennai and an Indigo flight from Dubai. Our personnel have been travelling on such flights."
