GFDO irked by Javadekar’s statement on Mopa EC

Panaji: Union environment, forests and climate change minister Prakash Javadekar's recent announcement of granting environment clearance (EC) to the Mopa airport project even before the environment appraisal committee (EAC) meeting, shows that he has lost sight of his job of protecting the nation's environment, said members of Goans for Dabolim only (GFDO).
Speaking to mediapersons, the GFDO criticized Javadekar for his unilateral and high handed behaviour, stating that a statement he made during his visit to Goa is a blatant interference and flies in the face of democratic processes.

"Mopa comprises rich and invaluable forests, wildlife, agricultural lands and perennial springs on the plateau," GFDO convener Fr Eremito Rebelo said. "Javdekar should not serve vested interests who have bought huge lands in the Pernem taluka of Goa and in the Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra," he added.

"The minister further violated all norms by chairing the EAC meeting, as reported in the media. This displays his lack of concern for Goa's already beleaguered tourism industry or the 10,000 poor Goans who will be directly displaced by the project, and his abject obedience to the needs and demands of private profiteers," Rebelo said.
