Larger new airport may handle 45% passengers from Mumbai

NAVI MUMBAI: About 45% of passengers from Mumbai and suburbs are likely to be handled at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), making it a bigger hub than Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA). The airport has been designed by US-based Louis Berger as per the requirements of aerodrome code 4F of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to handle jumbo aircraft A380 and B 747-8. These require more aero bridge connectivity to handle passengers.

A provision has been made for 107 parking bays. The new airport can also be accessed from two sides, easing the congestion.

Both CSIA and the NMIA are code F compliant. But NMIA has two runways as stipulated by the Union ministry of civil aviation. The CSIA has one main and another cross runway that is used during emergency and maintenance of the main runway.
