Maintenance of Chennai airport to be outsourced to private players

Coimbatore: Civil aviation secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey on Saturday unveiled the plans to outsource maintenance of the Chennai airport to private contractors, in a bid to make it a world-class facility with improved ambience and hygiene levels.

The announcement comes close on the heels of a study by a travel website, The Guide to Sleeping in Airports, listing Chennai International Airport as one of the worst airports in Asia.

During his short visit to the Coimbatore International Airport on Saturday morning, the civil aviation secretary attributed the current condition of the Chennai airport to the ongoing extension works there. He said civil aviation ministry was likely to outsource maintenance of the Chennai airport to private contractors in a year.
