'Private airlines reluctant to transport organs'

HYDERABAD: The state-run Jeevandan scheme has hit a new roadblock. According to officials, most commercial airlines operating from Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati are not willing to offer their services in transporting organs to facilitate transplantations.

Earlier this month, a private carrier refused to allow the harvested liver of a brain-dead patient, V Surya Lakshmi, to be flown to Hyderabad from Vizag. It was only after Vizag MP Hari Babu intervened that the operator agreed. However, the delay cost the life of the recipient patient awaiting the organ at a city hospital.

"It is true that private carriers are creating hurdles for transportation of human organs despite the rising number of requests. We are, therefore, forced to rely only on Air India flights," said Dr G Swarnalatha, coordinator of Jeevandan, ruing how there's no law at present that compels private airlines to honour such requests.
