Two more flights to Chennai

Come October 25, air passengers from Madurai will get two additional flights to Chennai. The Spice Jet is reintroducing Madurai-Delhi and Madurai-Mumbai flights, via Chennai, airline sources said here on Friday.

The airport here, which handles close to 1,800 passengers daily from and to different destinations, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Colombo and Dubai, is all set to get two more flights, which means, passengers from Madurai and southern districts could directly reach New Delhi and Mumbai.

The issue of boarding connecting flights from cities like Chennai and Bengaluru could be avoided.

The good news is that almost every flight carried its full capacity on most of the days; the fare too had dipped to some extent after the recent entry of regional carrier Air Pegasus, which operated Bengaluru-Madurai and Madurai-Chennai flights daily, said N. Sriram of Balika Tours and Travels.

In fact, after Air Pegasus introduced the lowest fare of Rs. 1,234 to Chennai, other players in the industry had to lower their fares, with Spice Jet offering as low as Rs. 1,499.

Of course, on demand, the fare touched as high as Rs. 14,900 to Chennai in Air India and Jet Airways flights.
