Rajahmundry airport to be expanded

Hyderabad:  The AP government has decided to acquire 857 acres of land for expansion of Rajahmundry airport to match international standards.

The land will be handed over to the Airports Authority of India, which will take up the expansion of the airport. The AAI plans to extend the runway to 3,165 metres from the existing 1,749 metres to enable landing of big or `code-D' aircraft. The airport is expected to play a major role in the bifurcated state in view of the proposed industrial corridor along the coast from Visakhapatnam to Chennai.

"If everything goes as per plan, the upgraded airport will be ready in one year," said M Rajkishore, an official of the Airports Authority of India.
