What smoking ban? Flyers still light up mid-air

Mumbai: It's not without a reason that no-smoking signs are displayed prominently in passenger aircraft. For, in an air-borne aircraft, there is nothing that spreads dread the way a fire does. Pilots are trained to handle engine failures, hydraulic failures, cabin decompression, but when it comes to fire on board, there is not much that one can do.

It is in this light that the instances of passengers smoking on flights is seen with seriousness. Last week, a Bangladesh national was stopped from smoking onboard Jet Airways Bahrain-Mumbai flight. He had managed to bring a lighter and had just lit a cigarette when a flight attendant stopped him. Such instances are rare though. The flyer apologized profusely, but other recent instances of passengers smoking on board have involved unruly behaviour.

Three days ago, a Hawaiian woman smoked an e-cigarette on a flight from Las Vegas to Honolulu. The woman, who was in an inebriated state eventually apologized for her behaviour. In 2010, a Qatari diplomat was arrested upon arrival at Denver airport for smoking in the lavatory on United Airlines Flight 663 and for making threats. When confronted by the staff, he jokingly suggested that he was attempting to set his shoes on fire. Deceased singer Amy Winehouse apparently spent half of her hour-long flight to Dublin smoking in the toilet. Even as an announcement was made, the singer continued to puff away. What was more, she was let off with no action.
