Acting on prior intelligence, customs officials seized some rare statues and held two people at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.
The officials intercepted a passenger bound for Bangkok on Bhutan Airlines flight yesterday. The man was carrying a hand-baggage with few clothes only with him but gave three wooden boxes as check-in baggage to be kept in the baggage-hold of the plane.
This aroused the suspicion of the customs officials. On opening the boxes, they discovered 16 wooden and 33 metal statues of God and Godesses and a brass bowl believed to be antiques.
