Demand mounts for AI’s bigger flight

Two more organisations have taken up the issue of Air India withdrawing its A 321 service in the Calicut-Dubai-Sharjah sector and replacing it with an A 320 aircraft with less carrying capacity.

The Malabar Chamber of Commerce and the Malabar Development Council (MDC) said on Wednesday that they had appealed to the Chairman of Air India and the Prime Minister’s office respectively for early completion of the re-carpeting of the runway in Calicut Airport, the restoring of the A 321 service and other wide-bodied flights. The Malabar Development Forum, which has a few Dubai-based Non-Resident Indians from Kozhikode as members, made a representation to the government a couple of weeks ago.

In the latest representation, the chamber of commerce has sought to point out that those who preferred to fly business class to Dubai or Sharjah had to fly via Mumbai, thereby spending more travel time and money. The A 320 was an all-economy class flight with a total of 180 seats. The A 321 had 12 business class seats.
