Dehradun: To ensure that people having handwritten passports are not caught off guard as these will become redundant by November 24, the regional passport office (RPO), Dehradun has issued an advisory informing people to get their passports re-issued at the earliest.
It is learnt that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set a deadline of November 24 for globally phasing out all non-Machine Readable Passports (MRPs). Thereafter, foreign governments might deny visa or entry to any person travelling on a non-Machine Readable Passport.
Speaking to TOI, Vijay Shanker Pandey, regional passport officer said, "Normally, the re-issue of a passport takes three to four days and only the 'tatkal' (urgent) ones are issued the very next day. But considering there is so little time left for handwritten passports to be phased out, for cases of emergency like people who have to travel overseas soon, we will ensure that their passport is reissued on time"
