CIAL’s new terminal to come up at record pace

Work on the Rs. 1,000-crore international terminal building at Cochin International Airport is cruising at a steady pace and is in for a likely completion ahead of the official deadline of May 2016.

Airport sources said that about 75 per cent of the physical work had been completed and the new terminal would set a record of sorts in the speed of work considering the mammoth size of the project for which the foundation was laid on February 1, 2014.

Work on the new terminal, with a built-up area of 15 lakh sq. ft., was taken up considering the steadily increasing passenger traffic through the airport.

Passenger traffic rose to 64,11,711 during 2014-15 from 53,86,463 during the previous financial year.

The overall increase in passenger traffic during the last financial year was over 19 per cent.

Aircraft movement too has increased. Total movements rose 11.81 per cent to 52,793 between 2013-14 and 2014-15 and CIAL has risen to become the fourth largest airport in the country in terms of international traffic.

The company’s annual report said that consistent growth in air traffic and the emergence of major start-up airlines were expected to take CIAL closer to its aim of becoming the hub of air traffic in South India.
