Customs seizes ingeniously concealed gold rod inside speaker, one held

MANGALURU: Customs officers at Mangaluru international airport have seized 0.93-kgs of gold in the form of a cylindrical rod-shaped object valued at Rs 24.25 lakh from a passenger who attempted to smuggle the contraband in to the country. M Subramaniyam, commissioner of customs said officers detained a passenger who arrived by Air India express flight IX384 from Dubai on November 3 with one premium brand speaker/woofer.

The officers subjected the speaker/woofer to a detailed open examination on November 7 and gold in the form of small cylindrical rod which was ingeniously concealed in the inner core of the speaker was retrieved with the help of technically qualified persons. On questioning, the passenger admitted that he had intentionally concealed the gold to avoid detection by the customs and to evade payment of appropriate Customs duties.
