Mumbai: After a year-long lull in gold smuggling through the Singapore-Mumbai route, Customs officials at Mumbai airport found a woman from Tamil Nadu with gold worth Rs 49.55 lakh concealed on her person. Officials said she had been noticed taking frequent short trips abroad, which raised their suspicion.

Besides the six gold biscuits stuck to the bottom of her feet, Poneraja Rajeshwari Petchinathan Komalaneela, aNagarcoil resident, in her mid- twenties and an MSc in physics, was also carrying two gold chains and 13 gold biscuits tucked away in different parts of her undergarments.

After the metal detector gave her away to the Mumbai Airport Customs, a body search of Komalaneela, who had arrived on a Singapore Airlines flight, revealed that she was carrying 19 gold bars of 100 grams each. Apart from these, two yellow metallic chains and one yellow metallic ring suspected to be gold were recovered from her.
