Hire airport space for wedding

Biju Patnaik International Airport is set to let out its domestic terminal to host socio-cultural events.

Airport director Sharad Kumar told The Telegraph: "We have got necessary permission of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to organise socio-cultural events at the domestic terminal here. Once implemented, the facility will allow those interested to use the space inside the lounge or outside the airport terminal for socio-cultural events. Bigger airports such as Mumbai already rent out specified areas for social events."

Asked about the kind of events the airport will play host to, Kumar said one could use the space to launch products and brands, hold fashion shows and marriage receptions and also stage cultural events. The facility can also be used for automobile launches, he added.

Though the decision to rent out airport space is being seen as a big leap, the facility here already has a few showrooms that sell products ranging from handloom, handicraft, jewellery, fashionable items and books.

The airport also has a restaurant named after the iconic aircraft Dakota, which was once flown by the legendary Biju Patnaik to rescue former Indonesian Vice-President Md Hatta and Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir on July 22, 1947.
