Man involved in gold smuggling cases held

COIMBATORE: A 25-year-old man was arrested at the Coimbatore International Airport on Monday morning for his alleged involvement in a series of gold smuggling cases. The passenger arrived at Coimbatore on an Air Arabia flight from Dubai at 4am on Monday.
The customs department took Yasir Ignu Mohammed in custody after being tipped by the immigration department in Dubai. Yasir is wanted in a series of gold smuggling cases amounting to close to 2,000kg of gold. "He is among the nine accused who are part of a gold smuggling racket," said assistant commissioner of customs, Anantha Kalayan Krishnan.
In August this year, the customs sleuths at the Kochi International Airport nabbed a 43-year-old man who had smuggled 5kg of gold from Dubai. Besides this, two other instances of smuggling were reported on the same day at Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru airports. During interrogation, the 43-year-old man revealed the involvement of eight other people in the smuggling racket, which is operated from Dubai.
