Pune: The hope for a new international airport near the city took wing afresh with the district authorities initiating new surveys to identify its land.
District collector Saurabh Rao said the administration was in the process of conducting surveys and inspections at many places with the Airports Authority of India and the Maharashtra Airport Development Authority. The surveys have been proposed at Rajgurunagar, Chakan and some areas in the south-eastern parts of the city.
The airport project is under consideration for long. But it has not moved ahead because of non-availability of appropriate land and opposition from residents to part with their plots.
With limited scope for expansion of the existing Lohegaon airport, the city's frequent fliers have been demanding a new one. People pressed for it also to boost investments. The fresh surveys have revived the new airport hope.
In a recent survey, officials visited areas near Rajgurunagar for the identification of land. Land near the Bhama Akshed dam and a stretch at Koye, Paiet and Kadus villages in the Khed taluka were inspected. The administration has sought details of the total available land on these stretches, the nature of reservation, if any, and details of land holding patterns, including the area of private land holders.
