Pune: The district authorities have started spot visits on the eastern side of the civil airport in Lohegaon to explore the possibility of land for its expansion.
District collector Saurabh Rao said if the land on the eastern side (a stretch of about 1.5 km) was provided, it could be utilised for passenger amenities and expansion of runway. He said the authorities were now conducting spot visits and collecting details of land holding on the stretch.
Steps are being taken at many levels for the expansion of the civil airport. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari recently conducted a meeting to discuss its expansion plans and provision of additional land. He had said he would try to make provision of more land to introduce passenger-friendly services in the airport.
District collector Rao said the administration was considering various options, including realignment of roads, to make additional space for amenities.
