New Delhi: With air traffic growing in double-digit requiring fast airport capacity expansion, the aviation ministry has sought exemption from environment clearance for ramping up brownfield airports in the country.
As per official estimate, obtaining green clearance for airport projects take about 400 days.
A senior aviation ministry official said there was an urgent need to create additional airport capacity, as soon there would be demand-supply mismatch if airports were not expanded.
“Annual passenger traffic has reached around 190 million. Our combined airport capacity is around 270 million. We need to fast-track development of airports,” a senior aviation ministry official said.
“We will write to the environment ministry to exempt all brownfield airports, including state-owned airstrips, from mandatory green nod,” he added.
