Startup regional airlines face exodus of pilots

New Delhi: Startup regional airlines, especially those with weak balance sheets, have started facing an exodus of their pilots, who are headed to more stable workplaces. These young airlines operate the smaller turboprops and their pilots are mostly expats.

Air India's subsidiary Alliance Air, that has a fleet of ATR turboprop aircraft, has inducted 10 pilots who quit two south India-based startup airlines and is getting job applications from pilots of smaller airlines regularly. "We are going to induct 20 ATRs in our fleet in next two years. Next year, we will get 10 more ATR-72s and start 45 new flights," said Alliance Air spokesman Anil Mehta, while confirming that the airline has seen an inflow of expat pilots from regional startups and is getting new job applications from pilots with small airlines.

Alliance Air will start new routes that will connect metros to small cities under the Modi government's viability gap funding scheme for promoting regional connectivity. From next month it will start flights from Delhi to Gujarat and Gorakhpur and from Mumbai to Gwalior and Surat.
