NEW DELHI: The government said six low-priced flights would be operated daily from Chennai after fares from nearby airports shot up to six times the normal lastminute rates — touching almost Rs 50,000 in one case — as incessant rains and floods brought the southern city to a halt and grounded passengers.
The civil aviation ministry, which had warned airlines that it would intervene if the carriers didn't stop taking advantage of the situation, said the flights would operate daily from the naval airbase in Chennai over the next two days to rescue stranded passengers.
