Ten months ago, Union Civil Aviation Minister P. Ashok Gajapathiraju had observed that bus stations were far better than the Gannavaram airport.
“This airport is very congested and passengers cannot even sit here. Busstations are far better,” he had said while responding to a question during an interaction with media persons here after reviewing the airport expansion plans in February 2015.
But of late, the airport has been buzzing with a significant growth in commercial air operations after the State government announced the Capital city at Amaravati in Guntur district. The Gannavaram Airport was only a small airstrip that mostly catered to the needs of VVIPs landing in their private aircraft to reach their destinations in Vijayawada, Guntur and other surrounding districts before bifurcation of the State. But it is now all set to become an international airport equipped with necessary paraphernalia, thanks to its proximity to the upcoming capital city. After AP Reorganisation Bill was passed in Parliament, a battery of politicians, senior bureaucrats, industrialists and real-estate businessmen started visiting Vijayawada and its surroundings to enquire about business prospects.
