CHANDIGARH: Insisting that Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) would ensure that the Mohali airport is christened after revolutionary Bhagat Singh, party spokesperson and Anandpur Sahib MP Prem Singh Chandumajra said he was optimistic that Haryana would eventually come round.
"I'm aware that on paper, BJP-led Haryana government may have recommended the airport to be named after the late president of Jan Sangh and RSS pracharak as 'Dr Mangal Sein International Airport, Chandigarh', but the issue will surely be resolved amicably," he said.
However, Chandumajra said the other demand of Haryana to attach Chandigarh would have to be sorted out as Punjab's view to bring in SAS Nagar (Mohali), since the airport was located here, was a valid one. "One way could be to name the airport 'Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chandigarh International Airport, SAS Nagar' by bring in the address in the name itself," he said.
Haryana had objected to the use of 'Mohali' in the airport's name, saying that it too had contributed to the construction of the airport. Punjab and Haryana had contributed 24.5% of the total cost of the airport and Airports Authority of India (AAI) paying the rest.
