Hyderabad: With the Shamshabad airport witnessing a steady rise in footfall, the GMR Hyderabad International Authority Limited (GHIAL) has decided to expand its terminal capacity from the existing 12 million to 20 million per annum. This was announced by S G K Kishore, chief executive officer of GHAIL on the sidelines of an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the city on Friday.
In the financial year ending in March 2015, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) reportedly clocked 10 million passengers in one year. GHAIL records indicated that this traffic growth, during 2014-15, was "20% over the last year, led by 22% growth in domestic passenger traffic and 15% growth in International traffic". Also this figure was "higher than the average growth witnessed by other major Indian airports".
The latest expansion, sources said, will be rolled out over the next few years at a total cost of Rs 1,000 crore. The information, however, couldn't be confirmed.
