Nashik: With the Ozar airport in Nashik figuring on the national air map, private airline Indigo has become the first to seek emergency landing at the facility. Earlier, GoAir had sought diversion of flights from the airport.
Following approval from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Ozar airport, around 20km from here, came on the enroute map of the DGCA'a Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP). Absence from the DGCA's air map was the major hurdle for the airport for any commercial operation. Now, the airport will be operational for diversion of flights or air service.
An Indigo source said, "We are planning diversion of flights from Nashik. We want to use the Ozar airport for emergency landing. In case the flight from Delhi on way to Mumbai airport could not land due to weather or other technical reasons, then we will land in Nashik."
"We have given a proposal for diversion of flights or for emergency landing at Nashik to Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd (HAL). We are awaiting HAL's approval at the moment," he said, adding, "At present, our focus is only on diversion of flights. There is no plan for commencing air service from here right now." Earlier, private airline GoAir had approached HAL to use Nashik airport terminal for diversion of flights and is also awaiting approval.
A GoAir official told TOI on the condition of anonymity, "We want to use the facility in Nashik as an alternative airport to Mumbai."
"Presently, we are focusing on diversion of flights and there is no plan to start air service right now. But we may commence air service from here in future," he added.
