Kannur Airport Works May Spell Doom for Flora and Fauna

KANNUR: A study conducted by the Kannur Jilla Paristhithi Samithi has found existence of rare flora and fauna in Kezhallur panchayat, from where land is proposed to be acquired for the extension of runway of the Kannur International airport.  To extend the runway length by 3,400 metres, about 70 acres of land in the ward 12 and 13 of the panchayat has be acquired. And if the runway length is extended to 4,000 meters an additional 30 acres has to be taken over.

“The study was conducted with the help of biodiversity expert V C Balakrishnan. He headed the samithi team and helped much in understanding the ecosystem of Kanad-Kolipallam area,” samithi president Vinod Payyada said.

Streams like Kanad and Edayanoor, which passes through the area, are major drinking water resources in Kannur district. The streams have a capacity to provide 30 crore litres of water a day. The water from the Anjirakandy river, which is mainly replenished by the streams, is being supplied even in Thalassery and Mahe. The water in the streams are purified by plants like ‘Nyatukaida, ‘Cherukaida’, ‘Neekadamb’ and ‘Neerkuva’ on their banks.  These plants have capacity to absorb harmful chemicals from the water. Besides, there are trees, shrubs and medicinal plants, which are essential for keeping the balance of the ecosystem.
