Season’s first dense fog affects over 100 flights

More than 100 flights were affected as this season's first spell of dense fog descended on the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours of Saturday.

The airport has been witnessing shallow to moderate fog for the last few days but flight operations were not badly disrupted. The severely dense fog that the airport saw on Saturday sent all flight schedules awry. Few flights could operate between 5 am and 10 am as visibility at all the runways hovered between 0 to 50 metres.

Delhi usually sees dense fog conditions between December 15 and January 31 but this winter, dense fog has come early to haunt flyers. In 2014, the Delhi airport had witnessed its first day of dense fog on December 16. The met department, however, had forecast that Delhi is likely to see dense fog after Friday.

Sunday is expected to see fog conditions as bad as that on Saturday but the weather is likely to improve around afternoon on Sunday, along with a rise in the day temperature.

“Wind movement is present in the atmosphere but it is expected to get stronger only by Monday. We expec some relief from fog on Monday, with more improvement on Tuesday,” said Dr. R.K. Jenamani, Head, IGIA met office. “The changes in weather has been very swift and with the maximum temperature dipping to as low as 15 degree Celsius at the IGIA airport, coupled with the pollution in the air, the resultant fog has been very intense on Saturday,” he said.
