Water gone from airport hangar but not snakes

Chennai:  Rainwater has disappeared from the airport, but not the snakes that came along. A couple of employees who went to clean the Indian Coast Guard's hangars on Thursday were bitten by non-poisonous rat snakes. The workers were given first aid.

The wildlife range office has been getting 15 to 20 calls from people every day complaining of snakes entering their compounds and homes. Wildlife ranger S Davidraj said they rescued mostly rat snakes, a non-poisonous species, from residential areas. Poisonous snakes were found in only a couple of residential areas. Most of the calls come from Anna Nagar, Adyar, Kotturpuram, Velachery, Madipakkam, Pallikaranai, Tambaram and Mudichur.

The poison ward at Government General Hospital, however, has not seen any significant rise in snake bite cases.
