CHENNAI: Union civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Monday said the Centre would take every measure to ensure that the city airport, devastated by heavy showers and flooding from an overflowing River Adyar, is equipped to weather downpours. Among the preventive measures the authorities are expected to take are raising the height of radar and communication equipment and improving the drainage system in the operations area to prevent flooding at the airport. The ministry is also planning to prepare a manual to train airport officials in handling extreme weather conditions and other natural disasters. "[Officials here] have made a few suggestions for corrective action," he said after inspecting the airport, adding, "This includes steps to ensure that radar and communication equipment is not affected [by heavy rain]." Raju said the Centre would implement these suggestions and conduct a study to assess the impact of the Adyar on the airport. Airport officials submitted to the minister a set of requirements that they requested the government to address immediately . The minister did not specify the loss sustained by AAI owing to the flooding and subsequent shutdown, but admitted that the damaged equipment was expensive. Meanwhile, DGCA on Monday conducted an assessment and informed airlines that the airport could open for scheduled flights.
