Bengaluru: The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs department at Kempegowda International Airport on Wednesday caught two persons for allegedly trying to smuggle 4 kg of gold worth Rs 1.04 crore out of the aerodrome. While one was an international passenger, the other was a groundhandling staffer at the airport.
Latheef, a passenger arriving from Dubai by Emirates Airways Flight EK-568, was carrying gold with him and planning to hand it over to Ajesh, the airport staffer. A Customs official said two companies have the contract of ground-handling operations and workers of the two firms didn't have to go through the strict Customs checks as they were employees. Both were from Kerala and are suspected to know each other.
