Pune airport's ambitious plans of forking out space for an art gallery within its premises may take a while to fructify. In keeping with the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) directives to offer dedicated spaces at airports to promote art, the facility is optimistic about unveiling a significant wall in the security hold area within a fortnight. Curiously, while the bid for tenders was sought on December 14, 2015, garnering just a single entry yet, the artists' fraternity is oblivious of this move. Speaking about the initiative with optimism, airport director Ajay Kumar said, "A list of artists will be put together on a first-come, firstserve basis from the entries received, following which artists will be shortlisted to display their work."
The genres will be restricted to paintings, sculptures and murals. Under AAI, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Jaipur and Raipur airports have already eked out space to promote art. The proposal that has been drafted by the AAI spells out the commercial arrangement in detail, explained K Srinivas, senior manager (commercial), who is involved in the project. Ten per cent of the earnings will be payable to AAI by the artist. The buyer will deposit 20% of the value of the art with the airport manager, following which the respective artist will be summoned to dispatch the work within 10 working days. The rest of the payment will be made after the work is received by the buyer.
