As airfares soar, PM Narendra Modi frets

New Delhi: Airfares continued to soar on Monday as Jats continues their agitation blocking roads and railway tracks in their strongholds. A senior aviation ministry officials said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the rising fares and a strict watch is being maintained.
Flying from Delhi to Chandigarh on Monday meant shelling out Rs 15,167 for a non-stop flight, while one with a stop in Mumbai cost Rs 27,400. The situation, however, was seen settling down  Tuesday onwards as non-stop fares ranged between Rs 9,200 and Rs 15,200. But fares for one-stop flights continued to soar. Normally, a one-way fare between Delhi and Chandigarh costs Rs 3,000-4,000. On Monday, even Air India was seen charging Rs 11,678 for a Jaipur-Mumbai flight.
The rise in the fares was seen despite the government saying on Sunday that it has asked the airlines to mount additional capacity on routes such as Jaipur, Amritsar and Chandigarh to cater to the increased demand due to road blockades and disruption in rail services.
