Banned China-made drones with HD cameras fly off shelves near Mumbai police chief’s office

Mumbai: The city police issue notices every month against the use of drones, especially around airports for security reasons, but Chinese drones are being sold openly in wholesale at Musafirkhana and Manish Market, a stone's throw away from the police commissioner's office at Crawford Market.
These radio-controlled drones are toys that can be flown up to a height of 100 metres but the costlier ones can fly higher and have HD cameras fitted. Security agencies believe that they are a reason for an increase in complaints, particularly from the aviation industry, about drone-like objects, which when seen from a distance seem like paragliders.
The cops issue an order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure every month, which states that terrorists may/are likely to carry out an attack in Mumbai using ''paragliders and remote-controlled microlight aircraft''.
TOI purchased a remote-controlled toy drone for Rs 2,000 which can fly at around 60 feet. "The more expensive ones are more sophisticated and powerful with HD cameras fitted and they can fly for a longer period. Put the drone in shoot mode, shoot at the height you want, and then plug it with a USB in a computer and the visuals can be downloaded," said a shopkeeper. The only difference with the toy drones and the real ones is that the toys cannot monitor what the camera is shooting in the sky.
