Trichy: A total of 23 bird species, thick vegetation and rise in garbage were found in the vicinity of the Trichy airport in a month-long study conducted by a team of environmentalists engaged by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
The study, commissioned in the wake of a rise in the number of bird accidents in the airport, birds and other organisms have made the thick vegetation in the aerodrome their habitat. It urged the Trichy Corporation to maintain a clean and neat environment in a radius of 10-12 km around the airport.
AAI authorities said that airport director BCH Negi, in a letter dated December 7, requested Q Ashoka Chakkaravathy, ecologist and assistant professor of environmental science, department of foundation courses, St Joseph's College, Trichy to carry out a study on the bird activity at the aerodrome and suggest mitigation measures. The team of ecologists conducted a study from December 12.
