2 men indicted on charges of smuggling people through Newark Airport

A federal grand jury Thursday indicted two Indian nationals for allegedly smuggling foreign nationals into the United States through Newark Liberty International Airport, court records show.

Nileshkumar Patel, 41 and Harsad Mehta, 66, both of India, were arrested Oct. 21 at the airport and remain detained.

They were charged with one count of conspiracy to bring in and harbor aliens and one count of conspiracy to launder money, the indictment says.

Additionally, Patel was charged with six counts of smuggling foreign nationals into the U.S. for private financial gain. Mehta faces four counts on that charge.

According to the office of U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations received a tip that Patel and Mehta were planning to smuggle individuals into the United States.
