Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad zonal unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested five people, including three women, on Wednesday for smuggling unaccounted foreign currency worth Rs 2.20 crore from the international terminal of the city airport.All the five belong to Delhi and had come from the capital by train or flight on Tuesday. According to DRI sources, two women of the five accused were supposed to carry the foreign currency to Dubai on a SpiceJet flight on Tuesday.
"We got specific information that five passengers are going to attempt to smuggle a huge amount of foreign currency out of the country through Ahmed abad airport. They were in tercepted in the departure area. On questioning, they were unable to provide ex act proof of why they were carrying this cash," said a DRI official.
Out of the five, four pas sengers -Mohammad Wa qar, Mohammad Azhar Bushra Rahman and Rosh ni Khan -had arrived in Ahmedabad from Delhi by the Rajdhani Express on Tuesday morning the fifth accused Rabia Khatoon arrived by an Air India flight from Delhi, also on Tuesday. Bushra and Roshni we re to carry the foreign currency to Dubai by Spice Jet flight SG 015. The other three, Waqar, Azhar and Rabia, were to leave for Delhi by an Air India flight.
Interestingly, Rabia managed to bring the currency notes to the airport from Delhi by flight. The currency notes brought by her were handed to Bushra and Roshni who were about to fly to Dubai.
