Jet Botched up Sportswoman's Travel Plan, Told to Pay Rs 1 L

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad-III District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum here has directed two private airline companies to pay a compensation of `1 lakh to a budding sportswoman for failing to inform her about the cancellation of flight beforehand and for putting her through several physical hardships, which indirectly affected her performance.

Ch Raghuveer Reddy and his daughter Nidhi booked flight tickets with a Code Share flight (a commercial agreement between two airlines that allows passengers to use a ticket of one airline to travel on another) of Jet Airways and Jet Lite (India) Ltd to travel from Hyderabad to Pune at 2.45 pm on December 12, 2010. At 10.30 am on the day of travel, Reddy received an SMS stating that the scheduled flight had been cancelled and that he and his daughter had been accommodated on another flight which was expected to depart at 9.15 pm.

However, as Nidhi was travelling to Pune to participate in a tennis tournament scheduled for the early hours of December 13, Reddy requested the airlines to accommodate them in an earlier flight and, accordingly, rushed to the airport by 1 pm. At the airport they were informed that there was no other flight on which they could be accommodated and they had to stay at a hotel near the airport until 7 pm.

To their surprise, they were again informed that their accommodation on the 9.15 pm flight was not confirmed. After much persuasion, they were accommodated on another flight to Mumbai late in the night and were dropped at Pune on the next morning by 4.30 am. Reddy claimed that the sudden change in the travel plan and the inconvenience affected his daughter’s performance and that she failed to get a direct entry to the international tournament.
