Night flights at Srinagar Airport: AAI puts ball in DGCA court

The Airports Authority of India Friday said that night flight operations at Srinagar Airport can start only after clearance from Director General Civil Aviation.

The Srinagar Airport is under the control of Indian Air Force which has already given clearance for night flight operations in 2013. However despite passing of three years, the airport has failed to operate night flights.

“Airport Authority of India is ready for night flight operations, but unless there is clearance from DGCA the night flight operations can’t start,” said Director Srinagar Airport, R.K Shinde, while talking to media here. DGCA is the Indian governmental regulatory body for civil aviation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It is responsible for implementing, controlling and supervising airworthiness standards, safety operations, crew training in India.

Shinde said that Airlines operating in the state should also come forward to commence night flight operations.

The operation of night flights has been a long pending demand of tourism players in Kashmir. Recently Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, AsgharSamoon, had also stressed upon the AAI to fix modalities for operation of night flights at the Srinagar Airport.

Regarding security threat on Airports after Pathankot airbase attack, Shinde said that the security in Srinagar Airport has been heightened after the attack.
