Park-and-ride poser for Pune airport

Harrowed by the traffic clogs created at the peak hours for flights landing and taking off, the Pune airport authority is looking to make a radical change to the flow of vehicles into its premises. It is proposing a "parkand- ride" option, where commuters no longer drive directly into the airport, but to a parking lot leased by the airport at a distance and then avail of shuttle buses from there. Predictably, frequent fliers are not impressed by the scheme, raising questions about the time consumption in the process of changeovers and fears of missing their flights in the process.

"We have 130 flights operating out of our airport.

The parking space within the airport premises is too small, forcing us to introduce a charge of Rs 85 on any vehicle tarrying over five minutes between the entrance and exit. Passengers have been complaining about this. While we are planning to increase the time allowed slightly to maybe eight minutes, we have approached the Maharashtra government to provide us on a priority basis, an open space for four wheeler parking, even if it is at a distance from the airport," informed Ajay Kumar, Pune airport director. "We will provide free rides from that parking lot to the airport at regular intervals. The idea is to minimise the flow of traffic into the airport," he explained.
