New Delhi: Travellers to and from Delhi should brace themselves for flight disruptions this summer as two of the three runways at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport are going to be partially recarpeted. The three runways at IGI handle 68 flights an hour and during the repair work, this capacity is expected fall to about 60. Hence, Delhi, which gets about 1,000 flights everyday, may have to cut about 200 flights.
"The main runway (28) is just over 3 km long. We have identified that 1.9 km of this needs to be recarpeted. We are not planning to recarpet the whole thing in a bid to avoid unnecessary expenditure," a top official of Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) told TOI.
DIAL has worked out three models for doing that job which include completely shutting the main runway for about 10 days and doing the work in one go. Else it can do the work by taking one part of the runway first and having the remaining portion available for flights. Then the other portion can be taken up by making the recarpeted portion available for flights.
The airport operator wants to complete the recarpeting of parts of the main runway before the coming rainy season and has sought clearance from the aviation ministry to do the job. The nod is needed as Delhi is India's busiest airport both in terms of daily aircraft movement and annual passenger flow and any runway repair will hit flights.
