Kozhikode: After banking on political parties in the region to work hard for the development of Calicut International Airport, trade bodies and other organisations that have been campaigning for it appear unsure whether this would ever be an election issue.
However, there are plans for a campaign on social media to mobilise public opinion on developing the airport. Calicut Chamber of Commerce president Abdullah Maliyekal said his organisation planned to initiate a campaign on social media, and wanted all sections of Kozhikode and Malappuram join in.
Such a campaign is expected to keep the issue alive during the elections and push the next government into land acquisition quickly after taking charge.
“We pin our hopes on the State government taking the lead in acquiring the land after the elections,” president of Malabar Chamber of Commerce C. Mohan said on Tuesday. “What everyone needs to bear in mind is that a major chunk of the passengers taking the flights from this airport are people of Kozhikode and Malappuram who are working in the West Asian countries to fetch an income for their financially backward families back home,” he said.
