Flight suspensions set to hit revenue

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has the state's only profit making airport, but it will soon have to tighten its belt, as the runway resurfacing project from April 16, will lead to a daily revenue loss of Rs2 lakh. At the same time, the numerous cancellation and suspension of flights due to the resurfacing work is expected to affect tourist footfall.
The situation may continue for a year or more as the resurfacing work is being done after a long gap of eight years. At least 12 domestic flights from the city have been suspended, already.
The runway resurfacing will start on April 16 and take place daily between 10am and 6pm keeping the runway shut for eight hours. "On account of runway resurfacing and operational reasons in the summer schedule, various airlines have curtailed 12 flights. These are all domestic flights," said an AAI official.
Besides causing inconvenience to frequent flyers, travel and tour operators claim that the suspension of flights will affect tourism in the state during the summer holidays.
"The tourist flow will drop by 15%-20% with cancellations of so many flights," said Manish Sharma, chairman, Tourism Development Society, Gujarat.
