MNS alleges unauthorised collection of toll at airport

The fight between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and airport management seems to be escalating over the revocation of toll charges at airport. Dubbing the toll collection at airport a ‘white-collar crime’, the vice president of MNS’ student wing Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), Akhil Anil Chitre, said there is ‘huge scam’ at Mumbai airport.

“There is huge scam in this, but we believe in the police department and look forward for quick action to be taken but I fail to understand why there is a delay and why the governing bodies are not taking action voluntarily as per the provisions of law,” said Chitre, who on Wednesday wrote a letter to DCP (Zone VIII) Virendra Misra citing ‘unauthorised’ collection of toll charges from commercial vehicles and other alleged wrongdoings by the GVK at Mumbai’s domestic as well international airports.

Chitre’s request cum application to DCP Misra also underscored that the section 18 of the Regulations makes it amply clear that the Authority can charge only ‘parking fees’. No where the Regulations enable the Authority to levy toll fees – thus there can be no levy of charges only on the count of entering the airports.

Scotching any possibility to protest against GVK over the ‘illegal’ toll issue in MNS style in near future, Chitre said, “We are waiting for legal governing authorities and Mumbai police to act. If the immediate action is not taken by Saturday (April 02) then we will file a Public Interest Litigation by Monday.”

“If the entry fee is not stopped and other malpractices at the cost of citizens are not stopped which we have put forth in our complain letter by tomorrow, then we shall take legal steps and file a PIL next week latest by Monday,” Chitre added.
